Contemporary Perspectives on Religious Epistemology
Contemporary Perpsectives offers you an unparalleled objective treatment of six major religious epistemologies. For each of the six epistemologies, the editors, Geivett and Sweetman, invite four leading authors to debate the strengths and weaknesses of each position. In each case, three authors present arguments for and the fourth against the epistemology in question.
In this manner, you are given a varied perspective and argument style for each of the positions. This avoids the all-too-often disadvantage of reading a text chock-full of the single author's perspectival and experiential limitations. Contemporary Perspectives provides you with four insightful and scholarly opinions on the matter. In all, the book contains 24 articles by as many authors. Including such strellar figures at Alvin Plantinga, Nicholas Wolterstorff, William Lane Craig, Richard Swinburne, William Alston, and John Hick.
The epistemologies and related authors presented in this text include:
- Atheism
Antony Flew, William L Rowe, Michael Martin, Scott A Shalkowski
- Wittgensteinian Fideism
D Z Phillips, Norman Malcolm, Paul L Holmer, Kai Nielsen
- Reformed Epistemology
Alvin Plantinga, Nicholas Wolterstorff, Robert Pargetter, Stewart Goetz
- Natural Theology
William Lane Craig, Richard Swinburne, Dallas Willard, Robert M Adams
- Prudential Accounts of Religious Belief
Thomas V Morris, William G Lycan & George N Schlesinger, James Cargile
- Reational Belief and Religious Experience
William P Alston, John Hick, James Kellenberger, Wayne Proudfoot
This text was a required text for a religious epistemologies course I once took. After recently rereading it, I feel confident in recommending it you. There is no better feeling than that of coming to one's own informed opinion on a matter.
