My name is scott david foutz and I live near the shore of Lake Michigan on the north side of Chicago. From childhood I have always lived near the shore of this lake. Its become a placid steadfastness to me.
I've been the (webwhipped) webmaster of TheologyWebsite since its awkward inception in 1998.
In addition to my incomparable wit and stoic patience, I hold a BA in Biblical Theology from Moody (Bridal) Institute, a Master of Divinity (MDiv) in Historical Theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (where I was both Teaching Fellow and Research Fellow), and a Sacred Master of Theology (STM) from Yale University. I have also completed ALL coursework for a PhD in Systematic Theology (with magna cum laude grades!!) before officially dropping out this year (2005). Go figure.
Yes, I am a theologically burnt out soul.
I lived a couple years in Japan teaching Bible and Theology while also learning Japanese language and Japanese Buddhism. I can speak and read Japanese and thoroughly enjoy Japanese culture.
I have (in the past) been a "minister" for more than a decade in several capacities ranging from "Senior Pastor" to "Chrisian Education Minister". The day I pulled away from "ministry", however, a huge wave of relief ensued. (Now I know what they meant when they all said "Uh, Scott, you'd make a really good teacher...")
For the past 8 years I have (happily) worked as an internet developer/programmer for a non-profit organization in Chicago (via skills originally culled during my seminary years). And for the past 9 years I have also been an Adjunct Faculty as North Park University (an Evangelical Covenant Christian Liberal Arts University in Chicago). I teach (required) courses in (a) World Religions, (b) Intro to Biblical Studies, (c) Jesus of Nazareth, (d) Systems Design and Analysis, (e) Internet and E-Commerce, and (f) Contemporary Issues in Computing. Thus I am blessed to consistently meet an amazingly great variety of students from the urban Chicago-Metro area. Theologically speaking, my students have included a range comprised of Gay Pastors to Zen Buddhist Priests to Palestinian Muslims.
In my (dwindling) free time I am also principal editor of Quodlibet Journal of Christian Theology and Philosophy.
My personal solace is found in the winds and waves of Lake Michigan and the never-ending cycle of seasons here in the Midwest, all of which I can see from the window I am looking out now.
I love theology. I love history. I love the history of ideas.
I also enjoy good cigars.
