Acts 5:27-32

Author: Scott David Foutz

Text: Acts 5:27-32
Title: Compelled to Witness

Proposition: Our understanding and experience of the gospel compels us to witness
in the face of opposition by the world.

I. The World Opposes the Gospel (vv. 27-28)
   A. What do we mean by "the World"?
   B. What are some motivations behind the world's opposition?
      1. Out of hardness of heart: despite evidence
         a. healing of lame man [3:1-10]
         b. angel's intervention from prison [5:19-21])
      2. Out of desire for the success of other views (5:17 = filled with jealousy)
      3. Out of fear or denial of guilt ("this man's blood"; cf. Mt 27:25)

II. Our Salvation Compels Us to Witness (vv. 29-32)
   A. Because of the historical event (v. 30-31)
      1. Continuity: (the God of our fathers)
      2. Unjust Crucifixion: (raised Jesus whom you killed by hanging on a tree.
	   [Dt 21:22-23])
      3. Resurrection: (God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior)
      4. Salvation: (to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.)
   B. Because of our personal experience (v. 32)
      1. witness of the Apostles in Scripture
      2. witness of the Holy Spirit within us
